WHO ARE SOME FAMOUS PEOPLE OF OR FROM BURKINA FASO?
The best-known persons are Maurice Yaméogo (b.1921), a former president of Upper Volta during 1960–66, who has been living in Côte d’Ivoire since 1970; Moro Naba Kougri (1930–82), the traditional sovereign of the Mossi; and Sangoulé Lamizana (b.1916), a former army chief of staff, who was president of Upper Volta from 1966 to 1980. Capt. Thomas Sankara (1949?–87), who gained a following in the 1974 clashes with Mali, seized power in a 1983 coup; he was overthrown and executed in 1987. Capt. Blaise Compaoré (b.1951) assumed the presidency after Sankara’s execution. and again Most famous citizen Captain Thomas Sankara, a left-wing military hero who loved dramatic gestures, seized power in 1983 and for four years charged around the country endearing himself to the people for his charisma and honesty.
