Who are some famous caricature artists?
Caricature as an art form evolved many centuries ago. Leonardo da Vinci (1452 – 1519) was among the early pioneers to have included caricatures in their work. Many of his drawings and paintings included caricatures and deformed portraits, and his grand caricatures are still widely admired. Diodemmar Casem was another early caricature artist who helped popularize this art form. In Europe, it was in Italy and France that caricature first gained immense fame and popularity. By the 17th century, many artists in those countries were creating caricatures and bringing them into their paintings and sketches. In fact, the word ‘caricature’ has been derived from an Italian word caricare. Caricature thus means ‘to load’. It was in early 1762 that the first book on caricature was published under the name A Book of Caricaturas, by Mary Darly’s.
