The known and adoptive father of Nicole Richie is Lionel Richie, the Academy Award and Grammy award winning singer songwriter whose hits have sold over a hundred million copies worldwide.In 1983, Lionel Richie and then wife Brenda Harvey took under their wing the two-year-old daughter of one of their band members. They raised Nicole as their own until the divorce between Brenda Harvey and Lionel Richie came to fore after Brenda Harvey found Lionel Richie in bed with another woman in one of the apartments they had owned. After seventeen years of marriage the couple divorced and they had formally adopted Nicole Richie when she was nine years of age. Her birth name is Nicole Camile Escovedo and one of his band mates was Peter Michael Escovedo, who is the brother of Sheila E and son of percussion great Pete Escovedo. Nicole’s birth mother was never formally identified but was reputedly one of the former girlfriend’s of the younger Escovedo.
