Who Are Invisible Children?
Invisible children are children who have a parent or guardian with mental illness. The children of parents with mental illness are often invisible in the mental health system. Service providers may forget that the adults they are working with have children at home children with their own needs. Because of this blind spot, families often do not get the full range of services they need. Families in which a parent has a mental illness and/or substance abuse disorder often have unmet service needs that can lead to family instability and disruption.
