Who Are Friends Of Elian Gonzalez?
To the Editor: Your March 31 editorial ”Juan Gonzalez and His Son” does not take sufficient account of the fact that it is Fidel Castro who in public statements, surrounded by his militant supporters, determines whether, when and under what conditions Juan Gonzalez may come to the United States. Thus, it is a story of Fidel Castro and Elian, with the father playing the role assigned to him. One may not approve of the intransigent and passionate advocacy of the Miami relatives to keep the boy in the United States, but at least they demonstrate their own feelings rather than let a dictator call the tune. When oppressive regimes are involved, politics becomes a factor, and is bound to play a key role in a person’s or family’s life and career chances. ROBERT B.
