Who are designated groups?
Employment equity refers to strategies to ensure that groups who have been consistently under-represented or under-employed in the workplace have fair access to employment and advancement opportunities. Four such groups have been designated by the B.C. Human Rights Commission and the Federal Contractors Program. They are: • Women • Aboriginal Peoples – for the purposes of employment equity, aboriginal peoples means persons who identify themselves as Indian, Metis or Inuit. • Members of Visible Minorities – for the purposes of employment equity, members of visible minorities means persons other than aboriginal peoples who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour. • Persons with Disabilities – for the purposes of employment equity, persons with disabilities means persons who have a long-term or recurring physical, mental, sensory, psychiatric or learning impairment andconsider themselves to be disadvantaged in employment by reason of that impairment or believe that an employer or
