Who are Counsellors, Psychologists, and Psychiatrists?
In BC, a Counsellor is a trained professional who has obtained at least a Master’s degree in psychology from a recognized institution. A Psychologist is a trained professional who has obtained a Ph.D. or Psy.D. degree in psychology from a recognized institution. Counsellors and psychologists are trained to provide counselling and/or psychotherapy services. Normally, psychologists charge 50% higher fees than counsellors. A Psychiatrist is a trained physician specialized in treating mental illness. Normally, psychiatrists don’t provide counselling or psychotherapy services, but they can prescribe medications to patients. The services provided by a psychiatrist are covered under MSP.
