Who are Britain greatest boxers of the last 100 years?
Dec 16 2009 by Martin Williams, Daily Post TO mark its centenary, beloved trade magazine Boxing News recently announced who it considered to be Britain’s greatest boxer from the last 100 years. The six-man shortlist was made up of Lennox Lewis, Joe Calzaghe, Benny Lynch, Ted Kid Lewis, Jimmy Wilde and Ken Buchanan. The panel chose Welshman Wilde, who reigned as world flyweight champion from 1916-23 and was a terrific puncher, boasting 99 knockouts in 136 fights. Here I argue that Lewis was number one, while Dave Jones – who regularly writes about boxing for our weekly titles – champions Calzaghe’s claims.
