Who approves or disapproves a designation request?
All requests for designation of a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) or a Medically Underserved Area or Population (MUA/MUP) are evaluated and approved or disapproved by the federal Division of Shortage Designation (DSD) of the Bureau of Primary Health Care on the basis of the shortage/underservice criteria established by regulation.
