Who appoints the Conference Committee Members?
-back to top The Speaker of the House, Congressman Dennis Hastert, will appoint the House conferees. He has pledged not to permit a compromise version to emerge unless supported by a majority of Republican Members, meaning that at least 116 out of the current 231 Republican members must support the Conference recommendations. On the Senate side, both Republican and Democratic leadership members have reached an agreement on the composition of the Senate Members, which includes a majority of Senators supporting the comprehensive solution made up of border security, Guest Worker and pathway to legal status.
