Who and what are the influences you draw upon when creating an article of jewellery?

When creating an item I am influenced by the purpose for creating the piece. This ‘purpose’, a starting point, usually comes with some boundaries for example a themed exhibition or a retail item both of which have very different purposes in my practice. I tend to use the same materials and continue to develop aesthetics and concepts from previous explorations. I very rarely start from ‘scratch’ if I do it is to develop a new collection of work usually for an upcoming solo exhibition. Once I have the purpose, considered the concept, chosen the materials and started sketching, I may make a model or some mock-up pieces. Once I am satisfied I will create the final object. When creating I don’t look to an other artist for influence or inspiration. I know that there are contemporary jewellers/metal/glass artists that I respect and admire but often the respect is about more than just the work they make, it is their whole practice and/or their philosophy.
