Which was the best fighter plane in ww2?
The plane that could outfly all others was probably the Me262 a German Jet fighter but was only produced in small numbers was very expensive and broke down often it also killed it’s pilots in alarming numbers. So most experts would say the American P51 Mustang for it’s long range fast speed great manourverability and rate of climb as well as being relatively cheap and easy to make. Intially fitted with an Alison engine it did not perform very well. It was then fitted with a British Merlin engine (the same engine fitted to almost all British planes in World War 2 when the P51 was introduced) the P51 then showed a great performance increase. When it was fitted with drop tanks it could escort bombers all the way to the target and back and protect them from enemy fighters. The Mustang was also used in ground attack role. The Mustang was probably the single most important weapon in the European theatre of World War 2.
