I am partial to the Riverside Study Editions of the classics. I don’t know if there is one for Paradise Lost, but since there seems to be one for just about every other book I had to read in college, my guess is that you will find one somewhere. I like the Riverside ones because they offer good notes, both on the language and the text, and you rarely have to go to a separate reference book to look something up if you feel like being lazy (which I usually do). I also like Norton Editions, for pretty much the same reasons. The editors and the people who write the study guides and notes are experts in their fields and provide a good supplement to the actual text. However, with the above having been said, I would first advise you to see if it is available in the Barnes and Noble Classics edition. Recently, those have become my favorite versions of classics.
