Ignore people who have said Nottingham is high in crime, statistics have been proven to bee inaccurate and you will only encounter problems if you go to certain areas. I will admit, these ‘rough’ areas seem to be far worse than other major cities, but there is no need to ever go to these areas and it’s not like you’d get shot down in the street – don’t let people put things in your head! I’m not sure about Exeter, but all the other options you have shortlisted are major cities, hence higher costs of living. Nottingham is a large city yes, but relatively small compared to others. Houses are also very cheap, and I found that rent can be just as cheap in a decent area than in a bad one. If you do choose Nottingham, then I would suggest looking in areas such as Beeston, Wollaton and West Bridgeford. Expect to pay around £35-50 per week, which is much cheaper than you’d find in other cities. Stay away from places like Carlton, St Anns, Meadows and Sneinton. If you struggle to find anywhere

Manchester or Nottingham. Both great nightlife, lots of people there so best chances at jobs (although can never be guarenteed in current economic climate) Althogh dont rule out Leeds and Birmingham, they are both excellent for same reasons as above People are friendly everywhere that is student like. Although each city is different, students are from all over so they are all as friendly as each other. Just in response to another comment here – yes Manchester and Nottingham do have high crime rates. But so does every city. In fact Glasgow is much worse than Manchester or Nottingham for crime. But student areas are generally fine – security is good if you go in halls first year, and then by the time you move into housing then you’ll know which areas are good and which are not.
