The units of measure that we use are English standard. The English use the same measurements. The idea of a metric system has been attributed to John Wilkins, an Englishman and first secretary of the Royal Society in 1668. The idea did not catch on, and England continued with its existing system of various weights and measures. The French are actually reponsible for the international use of the metric system The “Système International d’Unités” as the had the idea to re introduce the metric idea as their own (typical french) in the 1960s. it was supposed to bring the international community into one standard. Unfortunately the French have pissed off too many people, and the Brits and the Yanks decided not to change. So we now have to times all linear measurements by 25.4 !
