Which two former U.S. Presidents died on the same day, and what else was significant about that date?
“Jefferson Lives” 50 years after the signing of the declaration of independence (july 4th), John Adams lay on his death bed and uttered his last words thinking that Thomas Jefferson was going to outlive him. They were political rivals by almost any definition. Jefferson had actually died hours earlier. Ultimate little irony of two of the great forefathers dying on the same day. Look at John Trumbull’s painting from the Capitol Rotunda for another joke between the two presidents. Jefferson is painted as being about a foot taller and stepping on the toe of Adams. They were actually the same size.
