Which tree species can be propagated vegetatively?
• Cuttings: more than 80% of tropical forest trees so far tested can be rooted as leafy stem cuttings in low-technology ‘poly-propagators’ and/or under mist (A 30–32), grown on in a nursery and planted out just like seedlings. [This Manual deals primarily with rooting leafy stem cuttings.] A few will root from leafless stem cuttings placed directly into the ground, as is done with cassava (manioc) and several shade, hedging and ornamental plants (see A 4 for more details). [Many Begonia species can be propagated from leaf cuttings]. • Grafting: has been successful for example with Cedrela, Cordia, Mangifera, Pinus, Tectona, Terminalia, Treculia, Triplochiton, and is likely to be possible with most tropical trees. It is used especially for seed orchards (see Manual 2).
