The doubles tend to taste more similar than the triples. *It is true that certain abbey beers are not dissmilar to the Trappist beers from the point of view of taste.* Main point. Starting with the one that has set itself apart, Orval, which has no peers and is the only solo beer brewing monastery. It is a great beer and I think the most bitter of the Trappist beers. Orval is the most straight forward Trappist beer, being simply a mixture of traditional ingredients of water, yeast, malt, sugar, and hops. I think the three Rochefort color capped beers compare to the three of Chimay. I could see a good argument being made of Rochefort’s White and Chimay’s Blue as being comparatively spicy.
