Which Trappists beers have similar tastes?
The doubles tend to taste more similar than the triples. *It is true that certain abbey beers are not dissmilar to the Trappist beers from the point of view of taste.* Main point. Starting with the one that has set itself apart, Orval, which has no peers and is the only solo beer brewing monastery. It is a great beer and I think the most bitter of the Trappist beers. Orval is the most straight forward Trappist beer, being simply a mixture of traditional ingredients of water, yeast, malt, sugar, and hops. I think the three Rochefort color capped beers compare to the three of Chimay. I could see a good argument being made of Rochefort’s White and Chimay’s Blue as being comparatively spicy. Add to this mix the Westmalle double which, is more spicy than its triple and carries a nice aniseed aftertaste (Chimay’s Blue & Rochefort’s White?). Speaking of aniseed flavor, Lvleteren’s (Westlvleteren) red cap beer, has it prominently in the aftertaste. The red is their least strong (6%) which has
