I don’t think that you will get sued or sent to prison for downloading stuff from torrents… I speak from personal experience, as I have downloaded more than 300 movies from all kinds of torrent sites…I have downloaded other stuff as well and there has been no hint of any trouble so far… If the torrent site is putting up illegal stuff, they could get sued and forced to remove the same… That is what happened with Minninova…it was a very popular torrent site…I have myself downloaded several movies from that site…but a few months ago, it lost a lawsuit & was forced to remove 99% of stuff which they were hosting… If you are freely downloading from a torrent site, it means that the copyright owners have not restricted it in any way…if they have a problem they will legally force the torrent site to withdraw the stuff…and you won’t be able to download it anyway !!!
