Which summer job makes more money: Lifeguard or Camp Counselor?
If you haven’t been a camp counselor then you’ll likely be what they call a CIT or Counselor in Training. These typically don’t make anything, you might get a free t-shirt and a daily lunch out of the deal but that’s about it. But if you are made into a counselor then pay won’t be substantial, where I live you’d probably make about $10 an hour which isn’t bad but it’s not that big of a chunk of change either. For lifeguarding you’d have to be certified in CPR and go through a Red Cross class which you might have to pay for yourself. Around where I live lifeguards are payed a good salary, between $12-15 per hour but you wouldn’t be working as many hours as a counselor would be. Maybe you’d have 4 hours shifts as a lifeguard but as a counselor you’d probably be there for about 8-10 hours a day. In the end I would say being a counselor is better as long as they don’t make you a CIT. Check around with camps and if they want you to go through CIT courses then just say no and go with lifegua
