So, anaerobic respiration is cellular respiration in an atmosphere with an absence of oxygen. This mostly occurs in prokaryotic organisms and yeasts. However, it can also occur in the human body and higher level organisms. This primarily occurs when your body is not receiving enough oxygen for the required amount of ATP to be produced. For example, when you’re sprinting, you begin to pant since your body needs more oxygen to fuel the tremendous need of ATP to continue sprinting. After some time, you may develop a cramp or a side stitch. This is due to anaerobic respiration. Looking at the cellular level for respiration, you know that it all begins with glycolysis. However, without sufficient oxygen, your body “skips” glycolysis and goes down a different pathway known as lactic acid fermentation. This process yields the same results as glycolysis, however, it completely bypasses the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain. In essence, lactic acid fermentation only produces 2 ATP co
