Which side of the mountain are winds stronger, the leeward or the windward side?

As the name indicates windward side will be having stronger winds than the leeward side. The strength of the eddies on the leeward side depend on the strength of wind force on the other side. Either for landing or take off calm winds flowing steadily should be preferred. Turbulent winds will need good skills to manage the cockpit. I have seen gliders using landing strips running parallel to the ridge and on their leeward side, during take off or landing. Microlight may follow similar principles.
