SAN FRANCISCO — In an aging home kept together by the generosity of strangers, Larry Rosenbaum tries to turn his attention to eternal matters as he harbors a burning vision for San Francisco. Across the bay in Oakland, Rosenbaum works from his ministry-home, directing and training a network of volunteers in one of America’s raunchiest cities. Weekly evangelism trips into the city are made with a van manufactured when Richard Nixon was president. These are the days of SOS-Ministries, a year-round street ministry that includes an annual weeklong outreach, a stepped up project that involves at least a dozen churches and 100 volunteers. Through this year’s SOS-San Francisco Outreach, an estimated 50,000 and 100,000 gospel tracts are expected to be distributed.
