A. You will give the Passport number that was effective on the day of service. If you did not make the referral, you do not have to give your approval after the fact just to allow the provider the ability to receive payment. Q. We have a patient that we referred to a specialist and that specialist referred to another specialist but we have no record. A. This is piggybacking and shouldn’t happen, but if it does and you feel you are still managing the patient’s care, you can give the approval for the second specialist. No referral has to be written, but it must be noted in the record.
