Which parts of Japan speak standard Tokyo dialect?
The Kanto region mainly which means basically Tokyo, Chiba, Ibaraki, Gunma, Saitama, Kanagawa. But even within these areas there are some differences in dialect depending on where you go. We live in Urayasu (right on the boarder of Tokyo) and the Japanese in the old fishing villages is quite rough compared to what we are used to, but until 50 years ago, this area was on an island so it is understandable. Some regions are also closer to the Tokyo dialect than others and most people can understand and speak with Tokyo dialect since they are used to it on TV and are educated to learn the standard dialect. The further you get into the countryside and especially the older generations, you may have trouble communicating with.
