Which part of the ear is used to locate sound, and how does it do it?

None. The brain locates the source of sound by comparing how long it takes sound to reach each ear. Ppl like me with only 1 functioning ear cannot locate without rotating the entire head to try to compare which direction seems loudest, and then use the eyes to find a likely source.
