Babtism goes way back before Christianity. The Hindu’s believed any river in which an avatar of Vishnu bathed in could give healing properties to the bather. Hence Hindu’s bath in the Ganges, as Krsna bathed there. Christians practice babtism as it was part of the Essene Jewish initiation rites that the Nazarene’s under John the babtist followed. However, back then going into the worlderness and suffering temptations without food or water, and being a member of the initiates for over 3 years was also required before graduation.
