Which nations have not signed the Kyoto Protocol?
The United States hasn’t signed the Kyoto Protocol since the Republican-controlled Congress at the time thought that the emission controls mandated by the treaty would be too detrimental to the US economy- which was still in the booming phase of the late 1990’s. Another objection to this was the notion of an international body regulating industries in a country that considers its constitution to be the “supreme law of the land”(major source of US hostility to and advocation of detachment from the UN). Australia didn’t sign the treaty until the right-wing National government was voted out of power nearly a decade later- then-Prime Minister John Howard rejected the Protocol along similar lines- not really out of nationalism, but more out of rejecting the regulations. China and India also still haven’t signed the treaty, even as their economies continue to skyrocket beyond their lesser positions in 1997-when the Protocol first took effect in the signatory countries- mostly because cheap f
