The Jules Rimet Trophey was stolen in England on the 20th of March 1966, before England won it. So although it was stolen in England, Brazil were still the champions and holders at the time. At the time it was valued at £30,000, and the thieves left £3M worth of stamps behind! It was found by a dog named Pickles in the mud of the Thames….. Presumably the thieves dumped it when they realised there was no way they could possibly fence such a famous trophy! Later that year it was England who won the World Cup, but in 1970 Brazil was allowed to keep the trophy for ever, after winning the competition for the record third time. The replacement trophy remains the prize for the World Cup to this day.
