DNS is used on the internet. The purpose of DNS is to resolve host names to IP addresses. Since host names and IP are used on the internet, DNS is it. WINS is Microsoft’s implementation of the NetBIOS Naming Service, and as such it resolves NetBIOS names to IP addresses. NetBIOS is used (mostly) by downlevel clients like WinMe, Win9x, WinNT to communicate on LANs.
