Which movie is better, Blazing Saddles or Spaceballs?
Gosh, I don’t think there’s any question “Blazing Saddles” is a “better” movie. Which is funnier might be a toss-up for modern audiences, but, other than the cheap ending, “Blazing Saddles” is actually a radical and subversive movie, much more so than any modern movie I can think of. “Spaceballs,” for all the great things you can say about how funny it is (and it is), is just a light, goofy parody, and nothing more. Personally, I think “Blazing Saddles” is also a more cleverly funny movie, right down to the orange roof on Howard Johnson’s outhouse. And, lest we think it’s full of high-brow intellectual humor, it’s got the funniest fart scene in the history of movies. Plus, it’s got the fabulous and much missed Madeline Kahn as Lili Von Shtupp: Vud ju like anuh-zer schnitzengruben? I rest my case.
