Which make better pets and/or hunting dogs–male or female GSPs?
Which make better children–boys or girls? :>) They both have their gender-related qualities that make them either more or less favorable and attractive to certain people. It’s more or less a matter of personal preference. However, most of the behaviors or characteristics of each sex that are “con’s”, can be reduced or eliminated through early spaying or neutering. (e.g. marking, hiking the leg, wandering, “humping”, aggressiveness, prostate difficulties, etc. in males, and coming into heat–especially during hunting season!, mammary tumors, mastitis, pyometria, etc. in females). In our opinion, the males tend to be a teeny bit more affectionate and slower to mature mentally, and the females a teeny bit more independent and aloof. Again, though, this is just our opinion, and you will hear differing opinions from many different people.
