Which language is the New Testament written in — Hebrew Aramaic, or Greek?
Hi, Thanks for participating with us. Hebrew is out, but there has been quite some debate as to whether it was Aramaic or Greek or some of each. It is widely accepted that Jesus spoke a form of Aramaic. If that was the native language of Jesus’ apostles, it makes sense to suppose that they wrote in Aramaic. Perhaps they did. I don’t know. A sizeable portion of the New Testament is addressed to people whose native language would have been Greek. It makes sense that these epistles would have been written in the language most familiar to the recipients. Perhaps they were. I don’t think it matters much which language was the original when we don’t have the original manuscripts. More to the point is in which language do we have the oldest, most of, and most reliable manuscripts. The answer to that question is undeniably and by far Greek. I have an Aramaic interlinear and an Aramaic concordance but pay very little attention to them, mostly because the Aramaic text they are based on is less r
