Austrians generally speak German, although you will encounter many people who can speak very good English if you do any travelling there. Austrian German is a dialect in itself, and varies from region to region within the country… in Vienna, lots of Hochdeutsch, or High German, is spoken, which will be familiar to anyone who has studied German in school. Of course, since it’s a big city, many other dialects and languages can be heard. Some Slovakian speakers from the nearby Slovakia. However, if you head out to the western part of the country, especially in Vorarlberg (an Austrian “state”), you will find that the German is almost a different language. It is not just a different accent, but a different dialect altogether. They speak German. They have a lot of words for foods that are unique to Austria though. So if you study German you might not know what some of the things on the menu are!

They mostly speak German. I’m sure there are areas where other languages are spoken but for the most part, it’s a German speaking country.
