Various symbols have been used over the years by different agencies and by different surveyors with Fisheries Inventory for locating and representing lake and shore features on the bathymetric maps. Where no standard or symbol exists, a new one has been designed. The GIS Unit of Fisheries Inventory has developed and defined new standards for Fish and Fish Habitat Maps including standard symbol types to be used for representing features on 1:20,000 and 1:50,000 scale maps, but also applicable to fisheries maps at other scales. Appendix 1 of Bathymetric Standards for Lake Inventories, version 2.0, RIC (1999) has a table of the most current bathymetric mapping symbols used when representing lake and shore features on bathymetric maps. This document has been prepared as a Resource Inventory Committee (RIC) Standards submission and will hopefully provide a common inventory methodology for collecting data on lake bathymetry and creating bathymetric maps.
