Which is the right time to call up references ,before the interview or after the interview?Why?
My suggestion is after the interview. I believe that references should be called only if an employer is seriously considering making an offer to a candidate. This is especially true for more senior and executive candidates where the confidentiality of the interview and job search is of the utmost importance. Also, remember that interviewing is a two-way process — the candidate is interviewing the company just as much as the company is interviewing the candidate. For this reason, many candidates these days will not provide references until after the first interview at the earliest, which gives them the chance to decide for themselves whether or not the position warrants further consideration. Moreover, if a candidate is interviewing for several positions, he/she may not want his/her references called by every single company — that candidate will likely decide to pursue 1 or 2 positions seriously, and provide references to only those companies.
