which is the best woody allen movie ever?
Despite what you may have read or heard in the last twenty years, Woody Allen is an asset to the world of the cinema, and has created far more good than bad art. These are my three favorite Woody Allen movies, which I judge not only by their entertainment value and artistic content, but also by the elements which make them Woody Allen films. They are each in their own way quintessential Woody. 3. Love and Death (1975). Allen’s take on modern romance, existentialism, Tolstoy, and the Marx Brothers. A triumph at the time, I can remember stealthily watching this numerous times on a friend’s HBO, then rewatching it as I got older and got more of the jokes. Hard to believe this was considered risque at the time. At least the laughs are still there. 2. Crimes & Misdemeanors (1989). Tremendous cast, maybe the best performances assembled in one Allen film. Some good laughs here, mainly at the expense of a self-possessed Alan Alda, which are the foil to what might have been an excruciating mora
