I have fought anemia ever since my first pregnancy 13 years ago. I have found that for me, no iron suplements actually work. Part of this may have to do with mineral dependency. That is, I could be deficient in other minerals/vitmins that aid absorption of the iron. I have found that the best way to raise my iron levels is through diet. Pinto beans are an excellent source of iron, so I try to eat them at leas tonce a week. (Refired beans in your burrito count!) Watermelon, green leafy vegetables, baked potatoes with the skins, blackstrap molasses, dates, prunes or dark meat poultry are other foods that are good sources of iron.
