One of my favorites is John Carpenter’s “The Thing”. The effects are astounding for an 80’s movie and have a gritty realism that CGI still hasn’t quite matched. The story is exceptionally frightening because of the setting and the premise. The characters are in a remote arctic outpost with an alien creature that can imitate any living thing perfectly, so nobody knows who or what might be an alien in disguise. It’s a very paranoia-inducing situation. The goriest movie I’ve ever seen is Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein. It’s so over-the-top gruesome it’s actually funny. The original Alien is a great horror movie too. It takes all of the eeriness of the scariest haunted house movies and puts it in a space ship besieged by a creature straight out of someone’s worst nightmares. H.R. Giger’s design of the alien was a stroke of genius. Even though it doesn’t look like anything we’ve seen before in reality, it somehow evokes primal fears and half-remembered nightmares.
