Internet Explorer is, by deliberate design, a big, open, gaping security hole. Consider the web site that Microsoft has at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ If you use Internet Explorer to visit thsi web site from a Windows-based system, this web site will allow you to check for updates to Windows, download them, and install them, all from within the browser. Think about what this means. A web browser — the same piece of software you use to visit all manner of other web sites — has the power to download and install changes to the operating system itself. If it can download and install legitimate updates from Microsoft’s web site, it can just as easily download and install malicious stuff from less reputable web sites. This is exactly how a lot of the adware/spyware/malware is getting into people’s computers. This isn’t an issue with popularity.
