I’ve heard a lot of complaints about Buckingham Palace but enjoyed my visit to Kensington Palace several years ago. It’s too late for this year, but I would recommend Clarence House. It’s a lot smaller than the other two but really feels like a family home. The state rooms that one sees in every other royal residence are impressive but impersonal, whereas at Clarence House you can look at the Queen Mother’s Dick Francis thrillers on the bookshelf, and see some of Charles and Camilla’s wedding gifts. For ordinary folks like us it’s still impressive, but easier to imagine people living there.
