If you know J2SE well you can adopt to other versions which will open a lot of opportunities to you. PHP is also a very popular language but the maximum usage is in the web area. PHP is the most used language for building small to medium scale website even today. If you stick to PHP you will be very much restricted in you job type, but on the contrary Java will give more opportunities. Learning Java is really vast and has a steeper learning curve as compared to PHP.
