Which is better to have while traveling in South Africa: Cash, Rand, Debit Card, Credit Card, or Travelers Cheques?
This is a personal preference and depends on how safe you feel in carrying your currency in cash, card, or traveler cheque form. However, you will find that your ATM/Debit and credit card works very well in Johannesburg as well as in Cape Town. Rand is preferred when bargaining in the smaller markets. I would suggest a limited use of U.S. currency. Traveler cheques tend to pose the biggest issue and may not be accepted everywhere.
