Laser is better than optical. I wouldn’t worry about going above 1600 dpi unless you have a workstation with a high-res monitor that you’re using for detailed, intensive design work. As for mouse pad, whatever you want should be okay; just don’t try to use the mouse directly on glass since that can cause reflection problems.
