Which is better for a college student… joining the miltary reserves/guard or getting a military scholarship?
If you are talking about ROTC when you mention scholarship, then being in the Guard and executing a Simultaneous Membership Agreement (SMP) gives you the most money. You get the federal ROTC stipend, 100% tuition assistance and the Guard GI Bill and paycheck on top of it all. When I was in college, I did this and I took home over $1,500per month AFTER my tuition was paid. My buddies who were just federal scholaship holders only got about $900 a month. Also, as long as you contract with ROTC you cannot be deployed with the Guard.
