It is very easy to say buy product “X” instead of “Y” if a biased input is to be given. The best advise I can give you is to make an informed decision. By informed decision I mean know what you are looking for, find the product that meets the needs, evaluate the pros and cons, see some of the ratings on reputable photography sites and go for it. If you were not generalising like now in your question I may have come up with my input trying my best not to be biased towards are particular brand. You have not mentioned any particular model from each brand so a comparision at this moment is not possible. If you know your budget it makes things easier. If you know what kind of photography you want to do with the camera that will also help. My personal take on this is that if I were you I would probably stick to a major camera maker and in your case it is Canon, they sell more digital cameras than Sony.
