Oh, Lightroom for sure, but it may be more program than you need. Lightroom was written for professional photographers and has a ton of workflow features more suitable for processing images that will eventually end up being published with little or NO retouching. You see, pros get it right in the camera as much as possible, so don’t do much retouching if any. If you are going to be taking a class, get Elements (under $90) and use it until you can get into school. You can buy Lightroom at a huge discount as a student.
