Which is best, prefinished or site finishing wood flooring?
Site finished wood flooring is the granddaddy of all wood flooring. Is it best? Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on you and your circumstances. Site finished flooring allows you to site select the precise stain and finish color to match the lighting, colors, cabinets, whatever at your specific location. Your floor will be sanded or scraped to suit your specific desires. This usually calls for a smooth flat surface followed by a custom stain or finish with 2 to 4 coats of a professional grade floor finish applied in the exact sheen level you want. This doesn’t mean however that your floor is perfectly sealed against water spills (in your kitchen, bathroom or entry). Wood (solid or engineered) expands and contracts with changes in moisture from humidity or in liquid form. When these changes occur, your floor’s movement will open cracks between boards that allow spills access between boards.
