Which is a better snake to keep as a pet, coastal carpet python or diamond python?
Carpet pythons are large snakes. Coastals and Diamonds are among the largest, with 10+ ft specimens not unheard of… IMO, much too large for a beginner in the snake world, no matter how docile the species. They not only need lots of space (as carpets are active snakes), but very large (read: expensive) food. That said, every Carpet owner I know of insists Carpets are a dream to handle, and very personable snakes. Irian Jayas have good potential to be a first snake for the carpet fancier. They are the smallest Carpet species, and I’ve often heard they’re the most docile. Looks are all opinion… To me, a nice IJ or Coastal is stunning, but Diamonds are boring. To other folks, IJs are dull and Diamonds are drool-worthy. Choose what you like, and what you think you can care for… But I do insist you give IJs a thought, especially considering this is your first snake.
