Neither of the two requires trial and error, but you CAN use trial and error to simplify fractions. In order to simplify fractions, you can guess (trial and error) at common factors of the numerator and the denominator. Or you can factor each, and compare the factors. For instance, you may do “trial and error” to guess the common factor of 2, then 3, then 5, then 7… To change a percentage to a decimal, you simply remove the percent sign and move the decimal point to the right two spots. So no trial and error involved.
